This was the blurb I put on Goodreads (username Mistymaple) after I'd finished it:- "My first audiobook - and now I'm hooked. There is now no other way to journey to and from work. For my first audiobook this was a great choice. It is easy to follow and I enjoyed the different narrators when their characters' respective chapters were read. The storyline is simple but honest and heartwarming. It was a delight that the female narrator wasn't extremely clever or heroic and was more like an ordinary person. Will's character was well formed from Louisa's point of view without giving too much away about what he was really like. I thought that this added mystery to the story."<br />I hope that you're all well - I've joined a Book Club at my local library but they don't eat cake, which is very sad. It had absolutely nothing to hold my attention, I did not find the premise or the characters or the writing at all interesting and I was very disappointed that absolutely none of the cleverness of Terry Pratchett was present, at least in the part that I read. I have only read him once and the other author never but I was previously impressed with Pratchett's extremely funny and clever use of language - which was in my view completely absent in this book. I was glad that for once I had not bought the book - I borrowed from the library and was very relieved to be able to return it!<br />sonianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3183366914271388840.post-33510519075605523732013-06-16T09:23:48.920+01:002013-06-16T09:23:48.920+01:00Better late than never but as I wasn't able to...Better late than never but as I wasn't able to get to this meeting here are my thoughts about a book I feel responsible for inflicting on the others as it was my suggestion although of course they all voted for it!! I had seen both the film and the stage play both of which I loved but I agree that the format of the book might have made it quite inaccessible or at least difficult to read for those who hadn't. I found it a very beautifully nuanced and touching story about love, loyalty, conflicting emotions, betrayal and a good reflection of humanity in general. I would give it a 6 for the content - it would have been more if it had been easier to actually read.sonia bilsbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3183366914271388840.post-7411256933083567312013-06-15T08:55:43.845+01:002013-06-15T08:55:43.845+01:00Loved this book - the Tudor period is so full of e...Loved this book - the Tudor period is so full of exciting people and events and this was a story that I had never been aware of before. Beautifully written, engaging and really evocative of the period. Would give it an 8!!sonia bilsbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3183366914271388840.post-34765001286813122932013-06-15T08:53:35.068+01:002013-06-15T08:53:35.068+01:00As one who has never seen a film or read a book ab...As one who has never seen a film or read a book about the Titanic I really enjoyed this book - it could have been a very dry boring read as it was completely factual and based on the actual survivors testimonies but was made very interesting by the author's writing style. I found it fascinating that so many errors were made because of the total arrogance of the people involved: the fact that the warnings about icebergs (6 of them) were ignored; the fact that the nearest ship was not alert to the fact that the Titanic was in trouble; the fact that there were only half as many lifeboats as were needed for the number of passengers; the fact that many of the lifeboats were launched only half full; and the fact that the lifeboats that still had room refused to return to pick up the survivors etc., etc. The women and children first mantra was actually put into practice as women and childen ONLY which meant that men who could have been saved were prevented from getting into the lifeboats and the fact that the class system prevailed even when lives were at stake completely beggars belief. Although the ending is well known I found the whole story gripping and very interesting - for example I had no idea it took so long for the ship to sink. Excellently written tale of total incompetence - I would give it a 7.5sonia bilsbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3183366914271388840.post-15470945626967220862010-06-29T12:58:00.100+01:002010-06-29T12:58:00.100+01:00Just want to say that I will not be at the next bo...Just want to say that I will not be at the next book club meeting (boo) as I will be on holidays (yay), but I have decided to read the book anyway and so far I am enjoying it very much. That's the Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society by the way. I do think it should have a better title though - if it hadn't been for book club I would never have even picked it up!
